On Tuesday, May 24, the Valhalla Norsemen (3-27) beat the St Augustine Saints (16-13) 2-1 in round one of the 2016 CIF tournament.
Starting for the Norsemen was junior pitcher Casey O’Sullivan who pitched 7 innings, only allowing 1 run. Also pitching for the Norsemen was senior Justin Poe, who came on in as a relief pitcher in the 8th and 9th inning to close out the game.
The Norsemen scored early in the 2nd inning to take a short lived 1-0 lead. Saints would soon score later in the 4th. As the game trailed into extra innings Valhalla, sophomore Josh Heider solo home run in the top of the 9th to give the Norsemen a 2-1 victory.
Saints were the heavily favored team in this matchup. They just could not get the job done, in this one and done scenario, which led to their eventually outing of the 2016 CIF tournament. As for the Norsemen, they will advance to the 2nd round and a double elimination chance.
“ I’m just as shocked as you are, to be honest I was not expecting it to be this close,” said sophomore Jacob Barba.
